June 2, 2010 – The long road home…

June 2, 2010

The start of the long road home

Today started a bit better than the previous two mornings.  At least it wasn’t raining!  We broke camp and packed the bikes for departure.  We took breakfast at the kitchen and bid goodbye to our new friends.  I was starting to feel a little homesick, but sad to leave new friends and the mountain ranges.

A better part of our day would be spent on the Blue Ridge Parkway.  We’d missed the nicest part (so we were told) when we go off in Boone on Sunday.  We weren’t disappointed.  Being mid-week, there was very little traffic and the weather was beautiful.  There were many tunnels and the curves were once again, a Motorcyclist’s dream.

Our direction was North, with no real plan on where to end up for the night and no real goal as far as mileage went.  The next scheduled stop is Kingston, ON on June 4.  Should be no problem..

The weather stayed nice until about mid-afternoon.  We decided to visit Mount Mitchell, the highest point east of the Mississippi.  While the ride there was fun, the weather was a disappointment as it had clouded over and became very foggy.

When we had finished pictures we consulted with the map and decided on our route North.  Unfortunately, when we were mounting the bikes it started rain and then, we had the pleasure of riding through the biggest thunderstorm I’d seen in a long time.  My visor fogged, my glasses fogged and it made for a very long and difficult descent down the mountain.

The rain continued for a few hours, but when it ended it we had reached the state of West “By Gawd” Virginia.  We checked into a Comfort Inn and ate at Applebees.  It was a long day…and we were one day closer to home.
